Some Passing Thoughts On Success by Michael Е. Carver
I have been using the CP/M emulator package, Success, on my QL with some success. I like to look on our beloved Sinclair computers as dinosaurs (excluding the Cambridge 288). They certeinly ere a dying breed, though not quite extinct. CP/M is one of the older dinosaurs, as far as Operating Systems go. Therefore I find it quite fitting that I cen run CP/M on my QL. There sre two major plusses for CP/M - the wealth of programs and utilities available. and its portability. There ere tons of Public Domain CP/M software available through mail order. or via local BBSs. However. there are also many waried CP/M systems out there and this can be the flyin the ointment.
COMPATIBILITY
Many of the CP/M programs available have been tailored to different systems Ge. Могго Zenith, Kaypro). All of - these systems have different disk formats, and terminai (display) formats. Success contains a couple of disk formats (ell British) and a mix of terminal emulators (а partial: 7752 terminal). Included in the package is а Program to heip the user define different disk formats (the ability to read/write to different types of CP/M disks). I have hed oniy a modicum of success in defining disk formats. My experience shows that the Zenith Z-100 DS:DD-46 is the most compatible with. the SUCCESS package. This format has been the onlv one with which I have had complete success in both Read &
Write capabilities. A number of other disk formets have given oniy partial results (read only). For the most part а great deal of tweaking was necessary ta achieve this level of performance tie. Morrow MD3 DS:DD;48 and TRS-80 Model 4 55:рр:48).
With screen display and terminal emulation I have only received 100% results from Zenith configured programs. The IBMCP/M (B&W) and Kaypro terminal modes attained slightly less compatibility. The terminal problems usually apply to “programs” (іе. word processors, data bases. etc). The many CP/M utilities I
heve.run under SUCCESS heve ali proven to work well under this environment. If you plan to take the Success CP/M plunge. please bear in mind the above limitations. I also recommend а Ѓзігіу good book dealing with CP/M.
RAMDISK TIPS
As CP/M is a highiy disk-based operating system (ie. many commands.etc. are loaded from disk before execution). installing Success to run оп a ramdisk can greatiy enhance the speed of Success. However... Digital Precision's configuration program does not actually deliver on its promise to allow the user to boot up from ramdisk. I have included 2 Superbasic programs which will heip attein proper randisk installation. Listing one should be merged into DP's CPMCONFIG_BAS and then saved back to disk. The added lines will successfully alter the disk block parameters in BDOS contained in Success_68000_exe. thus allowing boot-up from а ramdisk. Success uses ә different format for reading а гаш CPMFILES file. as opposed ta floppy. The changes I have made will allow Success to read RAM as a Порру disk and not а ramdisk. Therefore it is necessary to transfer CPMFILES from the floppy disk to the ramdisk before executing Success. Listing 2is a short boot program to do just-that. (NOTE: Rename the Success
+ boot program to а file calied CPM_BOOT
then save Listing 210 vour boot-up disk es "boot" )
